Product Specification
Stainless steel (SS) Intalox saddle is a widely used random packing element in mass transfer equipment such as distillation, absorption, and stripping columns. It represents an advanced development over earlier packings like Raschig rings and Berl saddles, combining improved efficiency with lower pressure drop.
Intalox saddle is a third-generation random packing designed to enhance gas–liquid contact inside process towers. Its geometry combines the features of both ring-type and saddle-type packings, resulting in improved hydrodynamics and mass transfer performance.
The SS variant refers to stainless steel construction (commonly SS 304, SS 316, or SS 316L), which provides high strength, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability.
Construction and Geometry
The SS Intalox saddle has a distinct curved shape
• Upper surface - elliptical curvature
• Lower surface - semi-circular curvature
• Open structure with no flat surfaces
This geometry
• Prevents nesting and channeling
• Promotes random orientation in the packed bed
• Creates multiple flow paths for gas and liquid
Key Characteristics
(a) High Void Fraction
• Void fraction typically around 0.96–0.98
• Allows low resistance to gas flow and high capacity
(b) Low Pressure Drop
• Smooth curved surfaces reduce turbulence losses
• Suitable for vacuum as well as high-pressure operations
(c) High Mass Transfer Efficiency
• Large specific surface area
• Continuous renewal of liquid film enhances mass transfer rate
(d) Mechanical Strength
• Stainless steel provides:
• High crush strength
• Resistance to thermal and mechanical stress
• Long service life
(e) Good Liquid Distribution
• Multiple contact points ensure uniform wetting
• Reduces channeling and improves efficiency
Typical Properties

Advantages over Other Packings
Compared to conventional packings like Pall rings
• Lower pressure drop (~30% less)
• Higher capacity and throughput
• Better efficiency due to improved liquid distribution
Compared to trays
• Reduced energy consumption
• Higher surface area per unit volume
• Better performance in vacuum systems
Applications
SS Intalox saddles are widely used in
• Distillation columns
• Absorption towers
• Stripping columns
• Scrubbers and gas treatment units
• Petroleum refining and petrochemical plants
• Environmental systems (e.g., desulfurization)
Working Principle in a Packed Tower
In a packed column
• Liquid flows downward over the saddle surfaces
• Gas flows upward through the void spaces
• The saddle shape
• Breaks liquid into thin films
• Promotes mixing and turbulence
• Maximizes interfacial area
This results in efficient mass transfer between phases.
